Talkback Radio in Australia - Data Tables
|
The tables collected below are the product of a three year ARC Discovery project on talkback radio lead by Graeme Turner, with research assistance from Elisabeth Tomlinson, Susan Pearce and Stephen Crofts. The project was also assisted greatly by the media monitoring firm Rehame, who supplied off-air recordings of the radio programs analysed.
The project examined talkback programs hosted by John Laws, Neil Mitchell, Alan Jones as well as the ABC's Australia Talks Back. The tables outline a comparative content analysis of the topics (what kind of topic, who generates etc) callers (demographic data, political position where applicable and the amount of time spent on air). They enable a comparison between the programs in a wide range of ways, some of which are taken up in Turner et al (2006), or in Turner (2007). Largely, these articles provide analyses and discuss the implications of these tables and so there are no notes accompanying the tables. The final link, "Jonestalk: The specificity of Alan Jones", deals with the Alan Jones program and is meant to provide additional information to that published in the article of the same name, in Media International Australia by Crofts and Turner in February 2007, and in the sort of detail that could not be included within the confines of a normal journal article.
